Why I Make Art
My work responds to patterns in nature or human habits as they reveal themselves through time. These patterns may be the result of seasonal cycles or the practiced routine of daily schedules and occasions. I investigate how these moments evolve; whether through a gradual shift in repetition or in a radical schism brought about by sudden change. It is the tension between stability and action that I strive to capture in my work.
Using pattern, texture and color, I capture an instant of movement, and solidify it on substrate. I create both representational and abstract work. Manipulating material, whether wood, paper or wax to react to the pressure of my tools, provides immediate feedback and builds a physical record of my effort. My most recent muse, encaustic wax, is altered through melting, sculpting, and layering and allows me to create surfaces that are at once smooth and bright, shiny and dull. These tactile elements tempt the viewer to touch the artwork even though convention forbids the opportunity.
